Abstract

This research article explores the complex relationship between Western civilization and Islamic social values, analyzing both the points of harmony and the areas of conflict between the two systems. Western civilization, shaped by secular humanism, rationalism, material progress and individual liberty, has profoundly influenced global cultural, political and social structures. In contrast, Islamic social values are deeply rooted in divine revelation, the Qur’an and the Sunnah, emphasizing justice, modesty, family cohesion, equality and spiritual development as the foundation of human society.

The study identifies areas of harmony, such as the shared appreciation for justice, human dignity, educational advancement and social welfare. Both systems acknowledge the importance of knowledge and the necessity of safeguarding human rights, though they differ in philosophical underpinnings. On the other hand, significant conflicts emerge in the domains of secularism, family structure, gender roles, moral boundaries and consumerist culture. While Western civilization often prioritizes individual autonomy and material success, Islamic values place greater emphasis on collective responsibility, spirituality and ethical moderation. By employing a comparative analytical approach, this article highlights how Muslim societies experience a dual challenge: adopting beneficial aspects of modernity while preserving their spiritual and moral foundations. The research concludes that a balanced engagement with Western civilization requires Muslims to critically assess imported values, adopting what aligns with Islamic principles and resisting what undermines them. Ultimately, the study argues that the dialogue between Western and Islamic civilizations should focus on creating a framework of coexistence, enabling humanity to benefit from technological and intellectual progress without sacrificing ethical and spiritual integrity.
